A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes

So this blog is going to be a bit different then my other ones :) I got this email a couple of days ago from my friends Richenda Vermeulen and Lindsey Talerico-Hedren:

We are putting together our first ever link-up: We’re writing about dreams this month because we believe when we share our dreams, we are dared to chase them. These dreams have inspired us, enriched us, changed us, motivated us and fueled our love for life and God. But also how they change, how they come true, and how we struggle to reach them. They’ve moved us jobs, continents and through relationships. We believe dreams are made of the same filling as hope, joy and love – the things that give us breath to run, faith to believe, and a heart to sing. When we dream, nobody imposes limitations on us, and that which can be imagined and hoped for can be so. They remind us that everything is possible. Next week, on 9 May (8 May in the U.S.) we are both posting blogs on our sites about this very topic. We’d love if you would join us!

There are no rules only that the topic is “dreams.” Write as little or long as you’d like or can imagine. Post a photo or a video. Tell a story or write a word. Anything that comes to your creative mind about “dreams.” In doing so, we hope to remind all of our readers and each other how important sharing our deepest hopes and desires is… for support, for honesty and for accountability.

Now when I read it I thought no way am I joining in on this because I am not a “blogger”, I mean technically I am as I have a blog and write in it but not one of their awesome blogger friends. I just figured they were being nice and thought they would include me as I do have a blog and they didn’t want to leave me out (thanks girls for including me in the cool group). But the more I got to thinking about it my teacher side kicked in … Not every assignment is designed for every student in mind but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to do it. So here goes my attempt at being one of the cool kids and completing an assignment given to me :)

Dreams …. Now when I think of this word automatically I think back to my childhood and all the Disney Movies I watched growing up!! Disney was and is all about dreams. Even Walt Disney himself said: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. ”

I have had many dreams in my years and some have come true … Becoming a teacher (thanks Trev for letting me practice on you for all those years), graduating with honors both in high school and college, completing school debt free, and most importantly meeting my prince charming. Now there are also dreams that didn’t go as planned (well my plan that is) … kids by 25 (thank God this dream didn’t happen, I am not ready for kids yet), buy a house before I am 30 (but then I wouldn’t be in Australia right now), and there are probably a lot more but I can’t remember them right now (actually I just don’t like to remember things that don’t go as I plan ;)

But really what is a dream … Is it a goal with a more interesting name, is it something we do while we sleep, or is it things we think of that we think we can never achieve or get so there for its just a “dream”. The dictionary defines dream as:

dream [dreem]  noun, verb, dreamed or dreamt, dream·ing, adjective

  1. a succession of images, thoughts, or emotions passing through the mind during sleep.
  2. the sleeping state in which this occurs.
  3. an objectseen in a dream.
  4. an involuntary vision occurring to a person when awake.
  5. a vision voluntarily indulged in while awake; daydream;  reverie.
  6. an aspiration; goal; aim: A trip to Europe is his dream.
  7. a wild or vain fancy.
  8. something of an unreal beauty, charm, or excellence.

So I guess it’s whatever you wanna think of it as and since I don’t ever remember my dreams that happen as in definition #1, I am gonna take definition #6. Because to me dreams are more like goals :) So here are a few of my dreams as of now:

  • teach in another country
  • snorkel the great barrier reef
  • have kids
  • enjoy the present day
  • read 100 books in a year
  • affect someone’s life for the good
  • have hawks season tickets
  • own our own house
  • have a dog
  • complete our wedding scrapbook
  • travel the world
  • lead someone to the Lord
  • ride all the roller coasters in the USA
  • take my husband to New York and Disneyworld (two places I love and he has never been)

Now some of these are a bit silly but that’s o.k. silly dreams are some times the most fun. Some of them are way out there, which is awesome because it grows and stretches me. And some are just super achievable, those are great to have on the list as then I don’t feel like I haven’t accomplished anything. I can’t wait to go back and look at this list in a few years and see which ones I have achieved, which ones have changed, and which ones I am still working towards.

I for one know that no matter what the definition is I am not gonna stop dreaming!! If you can dream it you can do it!!

Not sure if this was the assignment given or if I even came close to it (this is why I never like English in school .. There is never a definite answer) but thanks for letting me be in the cool kids group Richenda and Lindsey. Check out their blogs for their posts on dreams: http://www.imrichenda.com/ and http://lindseytalerico.com/.  Please check out Jeff’s as well (we thought it was a fun activity to do together) http://www.jeffguthrie.com. It was a lot of fun writing this blog and tapping into my blogger side :) Hope you all enjoyed the little side trip on the blog. Next post … All about our Thailand trip :)
